What Is Natural Dyeing?

Natural dyeing is the art of extracting pigments from natural resources, such as petals, leaves, bark, minerals. and using these pigments to colour textiles. At The House of Kelleher, these natural dye materials are combined with non-toxic metal salts to create a bouquet of colours and imprints on fabric.

Compared to the conventional synthetic dyeing methods, natural dyeing processes have a much lower impact on the environment and also produces pieces that are much safer on your skin. Since this dyeing method is also dependent on natural botanical alchemy, and many factors such as the seasons, the quality of the water, whether, quality of plants, flowers…… can affect the final outcome, making each and every piece a unique and one of a kind, but all equally beautiful.

Organic Peace Silk

It’s widely known that silk helps fight frizz, split ends and wrinkles – but there is another thought that laying down on silk pillows made ethically should also have the animal animal welfare aspect of silk production in mind.

Ahimsa silk (Peace silk), which is theorised by Ahimsa way of life, is a silk produced without boiling the silk worms that created it so that they can become beautiful butterflies they are supposed to become – a process that is unfortunately not a given in the conventional silk industry. The worms which eat the leaves from the mulberry trees have not been sprayed with pesticides. Nor, have the use of chemicals been used during the manufacturing process.

We focus on using beautiful fabrics with varied weaves but with no cruelty, indeed!

You may notice small lines in the fabric when held to the light. This is not a flaw, but due to being hand woven by an artisan in a small Indian village and not mass produced by machines.

Care Instructions

Hand wash your Dreamcycle’s Peace silk pillowcase inside out with warm water, using gentle, PH balanced detergent for delicate fabrics. I recommend Heritage Park Laundry. Hang dry in shade or on damp dry setting and finish drying on a completely flat surface with a towel underneath.

Should you feel the need to iron your Dreamcycle pillowcase, please use the ‘silk’ setting on your iron, turn the pillowcase inside out and make sure that your iron is clean. Use a thin piece of clean, white material between the pillowcase while you iron to avoid burning. As you iron, never move the iron back and forth since this can break down the delicate fibers. Instead, move the iron quickly in one direction and move the iron to the next area.

Disclaimer

All of my silk fabric colors are produced using natural dyes, not chemical, and natural variations do occur. Each hand-dyed piece has unique marks—these are not stains or defects.

They are cut and sewn in a small studio in the USA. Please also be aware that sometimes naturally dyed colors fade.

Candles, herb bundles, and pendants are handmade and therefore unique in size, color, and ingredient amounts. Stones and crystals vary in size and color. If you have any additional questions, comments or concerns, please contact us at [email protected].
